CHARLEMAGNE VIRTUAL LETTERBOX

In preparation of my planting a letterbox here in Germany based on Charlemagne, I’m making this virtual letterbox for those of you who cannot travel over here, or have to wait a bit.  Depending on your language, he goes by a few names.  French – Charlemagne, German – Karl des Grosse, English – Charles the Great

One of the greatest men to ever rule in history was Charlemagne and he’s one of my husband’s greatest heroes.  Not only was he a great ruler, but an incredible humanitarian and family man as well.  He felt reading should be available to the masses and put a teaching structure into effect.  This was even though he never learned to read well himself.  He also loved his family so dearly, he asked that he daughters would not move away and marry.  He turned a blind eye to any indiscretions and illegitimate grandchildren, just so he could keep his family close.  This may sound odd, but we see it as wanting to keep a close-knit family, even though there were some quirks with it.

Finally, he was a strong believer of the separation of church and state.  He was furious when the Church tricked him and crowned him, as he felt the Church should not be a political entity, but keep to the spiritual issues.  Not to say he wasn’t religious, as he helped finance many great Cathedrals.  He just knew the importance of not mixing religion with government.  Okay, so you’ve finished your brief history lesson.  Now see if you can answer a few questions about Charlemagne and find your stamp.

  1. What is the name of the city where Charlemagne’s seat of power was located?  Please use the German, not the French name. (1st letter is the 5th letter of the secret word.)
  2. What was Charlemagne’s ruling title?  For example, “king.”  His title had three words to it, so it’s not “king.” (1st letter of the 1st word is the 4th letter of the secret word & last letter of the 3rd word is the 6th letter of the secret word.)
  3. What was the name of the Pope who crowned Charlemagne?  I just need his name, not Pope.  (The 2nd letter is the 1st letter of the secret word.)
  4. What year was he crowned by this Pope?  Write the number as a word, not breaking up the digits into individual words. (The 2nd letter of the 1st word is the 2nd letter of the secret word & the last letter of the 2nd word is the last letter of the secret word.)
  5. What were the people called that Charlemagne ruled over?  Not “peasants,” but the name based on their location. (4th letter is the 3rd letter of the secret word.)
FINAL HINT: The secret word is an important one in relation to Charlemagne, not a jumble of letters.

Enter the secret word into the following address to find your stamp.  After I plant the traditional box, check back to gain the coordinates.  Then visit Germany and find the stamp again to mark your book.
